Lights Off For Bogong Moth
For the month of September Up2Us Landcare Alliance will be promoting the ‘Lights Off for Bogong Moth’ campaign.
Mt Buller is one of three know sites where the endangered Pygmy Possum is found. Each spring the Pygmy Possum wake from hibernation.
The main food source for the Mountain Pygmy Possum is the Bogong Moth. At this same time the Bogong moth is in the last leg of its migration from Queenland to escape to the cool boulder fields of the Australian Alps for the summer. Bright lights from towns and cities are thought to lure the moths away from their migration path decreasing the number of moths that complete the migration. The Pygmy possum relies on this food source to raise their young. Sadly the Bogong Moths populations appear to have decreased over the past few years. Let help the Bogong Moths reach their destination for the possums. “Lights Off for Bogong Moths” & the Pygmy Possum.
